GAUT REF#: 002/25-26/E0277

Kusasa Refining Pty Ltd (the Applicant) has appointed Environmental Impact Management Services (Pty) Ltd (EIMS) as the Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP) to assist with undertaking the required authorisation processes (including the statutory public participation), and to compile and submit the required documentation in support of application for:

  • Environmental Authorisation (EA) in accordance with the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA- Act 107 of 1998)- Listed activity: GNR983 of 2014 (as amended) – Listing Notice 1, Activity 34 (Amendment to existing Atmospheric Emissions Licence).
  • Amendment to the Atmospheric Emissions Licence (Ref #: 14/1/1/7/8/188/Kusasa/Wadeville/ALB) in accordance with the requirements of the National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act (NEM:AQA- Act 39 of 2004)- Listed activity: Sub-category 4.17 (Precious and base metal production and refining).

Additional listed activities may be identified during the application process.

The facility currently operates an established refining process, predominantly for gold and silver with some precious group metals (PGMs). The Applicant intends to expand and install an additional PGM refining unit and add new precious metals to their production line. The proposed PGM refining line will be installed within the existing enclosed factory with no additional building alterations to be made. The proposed PMG refining line fits within the existing footprint which has been authorized. The approved design production capacity will also not be exceeded as the capacity provided is sufficient. The new line will increase the Applicants capabilities rather than total production, reflecting a modest enhancement rather than a material expansion of capacity.

The facility is located on the corner of Murray and Rossouw Road, Wadeville, Germiston in the City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, Gauteng Province. The centre point of the site is at 26°15’34.87″S; 28°10’50.96″E. Refer to attached project locality map.

EIMS will be following the procedures defined in the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Regulations (GRN982 of 2014, as amended) for undertaking a Basic Assessment process in support of the AEL amendment application.
